Conference Opportunity: Indigenous Collections Symposium 2020: Mashkawatgong-mamawewiziwin – strengthening our bonds, sharing our practices

The Ontario Museum Association, our partners and members of the Indigenous Collections Working Group are pleased to invite you to join us at the Canadian Museum of History on March 25-26, 2020 for Indigenous Collections Symposium: Mashkawatgong-mamawewiziwin – strengthening our bonds, sharing our practices. Following from the Indigenous Collections Symposium: Promising Practices, Challenging Issues and Changing the System, this symposium takes inspiration from the ideas discussed at that event and continues the conversation. With a focus on putting ideas into practice, this two-day event aims to support and connect museum professionals from Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations and members of Indigenous communities.

Target Audience:

This symposium will be of interest to museum workers and community members who identify as Indigenous.

This symposium is an opportunity for people from organizations and communities with Indigenous collections in their care to learn from each other’s practices and to network with others.

Themes include:

  • Addressing barriers to access to museum collections by Indigenous communities

  • How Indigenous communities access museum collections in Canada and abroad

  • Community based collections

  • Implementing traditional care and ceremony in collections care

  • Narrative vs western research

  • Repatriation

Participants will have an opportunity to sign up for behind-the-scenes tours with museum staff. Stay tuned for more details!

  • OMA and OAAG Members: $250.00 + HST

  • Non-members: $350.00 + HST

Bursaries:

Five bursaries have been allocated for individuals representing Indigenous-run organizations.  Application Deadline: February 7, 2020.

  • These bursaries are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

  • Bursaries cover the cost of registration.

  • Bursaries will be awarded to no more than one person per organization.

  2. Enter the name of the organization you represent.
